Audience and Institution Analysis

College Magazine Flat Plan

College Front Cover Magazine Analysis

Using this magazine I will analyse the conventions of a college magazine. Firstly the immediate denotation of the magazine is a young man smiling directly into the camera, holding textbooks. The connotation of the smile is to imply that he is happy being at college, and the connotation of the books is to clearly showcase the genre and target audience of the magazine - it is aimed at students and is a magazine made to cater to them. He is wearing neat clothing and looks organised which is meant to appeal to the reader. Aside from the reading we can connote the genre of the magazine from the conventional features of a general magazine - the masthead which reads 'College lifestyle' is an obvious clue that the magazine is for college students and the language used on the cover lines also indicate this as they are things linked to life at college ; for example, "make money on campus" and "college couture". It also has a short intro of the article underneath the cover line showing us that this is  another convention of college magazine covers. It includes a skyline which says "Your exclusive guide to everything hip, hot and happening" showing that the magaizne is meant to inform students of what are the main topics on the campus - this is most likely a convention of other college magazine's as a way to appeal to the audience.

It uses a simplistic colour and font scheme - white and yellow scheme with a standard, easy to read font. Using commonly used fonts is a convention

Information about Hip Hop

The genre of my magazine will be 'Hip Hop'

Hip Hop is a large music genre which was created African American and Latino teenagers during the 1970s within the poor areas of America , primarily New York City, as a way to entertain others and themselves. The first rap song ever released (Rapper's Delight by The Sugarhill Gang) surprisingly became a top ten hit and then an interest in rapping and hip hop was born.

Recently hip hop has become a subculture as well as a music genre and has spawned many other sub-genres such as Trap, Grime and Alternative Hip Hop amongst many more. These genres have gone on to become very popular genres within their own right however they are still classified under hip hop.

In the past (and still presently), the main influential and known people within hip hop were rappers such as RUN DMC, Jay- Z, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G, N.W.A, Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott amongst many more. Presently, influential people are people like Drake, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Eminem, J.Cole and Nicki Minaj amongst many more.

I am aiming to get a high grade at AS level and I hope to achieve this through this blog.

Enjoy and anticipate further posts!

Evaluation of 5 Hip Hop Tracks Article

For this article, I researched the magazine 'Fader' to use as a basis for the way I would write and style my article as well as the layout I would use for the DPS. Fader weekly updates their online magazine with an article entitled "11 tracks you need in your life this week". I used this article as a basis of how to word my paragraphs on each song as the article was similar to the task at hand. I found that Fader used lots of informal/slang language that would be understood by the target audience therefore i used the same type of language to accurately mimic them. Also, the way they styled the article e.g. bolding the name of the artists and song whenever mentioned was something I also did.

Using indesign is an area I can improve in as I believe I did well for a first try but can improve with the way my finished design looked. I managed to fit the colour scheme which made it seem more professional however the way I fit some of the pictures onto the page and the way I organised the textboxes looks slightly unprofessional and does not fit the standard way a magazine would be organised. Also, as it was my first time i didn't know my way around indesign so I need to learn how to use it properly.

I am happy with the finished project however as mentioned above it could be greatly improved.
